Throughout my late teens to mid twenties I worked as Head Groom and Riding Instructor (BHSAI) at a prestigious public school in the UK, I worked long hours with the added responsibility of the care of people’s beloved horses. Looking back I was stressed out, confused and emotionally lost. While my gut feeling was to leave, my head would keep me there in the safety and security of a permanent job for several years. I took up trail running as I found it the only release to get myself out of my tumultuous head.
Through trail running and meeting a new partner, who was also looking for change, came the clarity to quit my job and sell all my belongings. We bought a van, headed to Europe and found ourselves living in the Portuguese mountains, managing a Glamping site. It was here that I was introduced to my very first yoga class. I was still enjoying trail running and guessed yoga could compliment my running endeavours, but I soon discovered the effects of the practice reached far beyond physical benefits. I spent the next few years travelling and working seasonal jobs in France. As adventurous and carefree as it may sound, this lifestyle brought a lot of uncertainty and change, my mat soon became my grounding space. I started to notice each time I stepped on my mat, my thoughts became clearer, my reaction to things around me became less adverse. I laughed more, loved more deeply and really tried to connect with people around me… I let go of situations that sought to bring me down. Realising yoga was becoming more than a hobby, and feeling a strong need to share my passion, I attended my first 200hr Yoga Teacher Training in Goa, India at Sampoorna Yoga Village, I ended up staying for a further three months as head Karma Yogi, teaching in the drop in Shala and helping my teachers adjust in class.
I now teach yoga, meditation and mindfulness at a detox retreat in Somerset, UK with the hope that people leave each class feeling happier, healthier and fully equipped with the tools to take their practice off the mat and into their every day life.
